Anna Jurek is an integrative child and adolescent counsellor who supports young people to safely express and explore their feelings by using the Arts, imagination and play. The creative processes contained within the context of a trusting relationship and the rhythm of regular meetings offer opportunities for change. Thus, counselling can help children and adolescents gain a better understanding of themselves and others whilst building resilience and promoting emotional wellbeing. Anna’s experience as a counsellor across various school settings has highly informed her practice, as it has been providing her with a greater understanding of young people in their school life. While working with a young client Anna also works with families to gain a full understanding of the difficulties and determine the most effective way forward. She provides sessions for parents to help them to understand their child’s needs and how to respond to them and support them during the counselling process.
Anna’s background in cross-cultural psychology means that she understands diversity and anxiety related to cross-cultural and racial/ethnic identity issues. These can also be linked with transition periods in the children’s and adolescents’ lives and, therefore, it is pivotal to analyse the role these factors play in a young person’s life and how this transition could be supported. Accordingly, her experience in cross-cultural settings is exceptionally valued, especially when working with families who migrated to a different country. For this reason, she is particularly interested in working with issues, such as transition, acculturation, anger, relationships difficulties, anxiety, depression, and divorce.
Anna holds a Masters in Applied Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling. In addition, she has specific training in working with parents, helping them to better understand their children behaviour and gain confidence in managing it. In her approach to children and adolescents, Anna draws on person-centred and play therapy to discover the most adequate way to work with her clients’ difficulties. Anna’s private practice at The Awareness Centre is further supported by her work within the charity sector at Place2Be and The Mix.
Anna is a professional member of the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists (MBACP) and adheres to the BACP Code of Ethics; maintaining confidentiality and following relevant safeguarding procedures where necessary. She holds a full professional liability insurance and an up-to-date DBS (Disclosures and Barring service) certificate that further confirm her credibility as a competent and effective counsellor working with children and their families.
Anna offers therapy in English and Polish.
