Barbara Volkar is a qualified Transactional Analysis (TA) counsellor in the final stages of her Masters in TA Psychotherapy. She has experience in anger management, eating disorders, addictions, anxiety, depression, sexual assault and family and relationship issues. She works with clients looking for long-term as well as short-term counselling. In line with TA philosophy, Barbara believes the broader purpose of therapy is to develop and expand our capacities for intimacy, awareness and spontaneity.
Barbara will work together with you to create a clear and non-judgmental working relationship in which you can explore whatever issues you bring. Research has shown that therapy is most effective when the client and therapist establish and agree on goals together – whether that’s behavioural change or gaining more understanding of the conscious and unconscious beliefs you hold about yourself, others and life. Often when our beliefs change, our behaviour follows – and, equally, new behaviours affect and shift our self-limiting beliefs.
Personal transformation often comes from a mixture of three therapeutic elements:
- understanding your past in a new way;
- new experiences (in the therapy room as well as outside);
- and authenticity or honesty in the therapeutic relationship.
As a counsellor Barbara’s role is to help you find the unique balance of these three elements, which will work best for you. Barbara’s background is in the arts and publishing. She enjoys music and travelling in her spare time.
Barbara works in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Clapham. She offers therapy in English and Slovenian.
