Chris Matcham is a Counsellor and Psychotherapist, with a Masters degree from a BACP-accredited course at Roehampton University, following a BA in Psychology with Italian and a Post-Graduate certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling. He is a fully registered member of the BACP, working towards professional accreditation. Having worked within the NHS and the charity sector, Chris is now in private practice at the Awareness Centre in Tooting and other London locations.
Working as an Integrative therapist, Chris draws on a wide range of theories, working in an empathic, person-centred way whilst combining concepts from various schools of thought, such as Attachment Theory, Psychodynamic work and Existentialist philosophies.
Chris will provide you with a safe space to be able to talk freely about anything that is painful or troubling you, in confidence and without judgement. Each person’s experience is seen as unique and Chris aims to help build a relationship that allows you to feel held, secure and more able to examine what is bringing you to therapy; helping you to find a “way of being” which allows you to feel more at ease in the world.
You will work in collaboration with Chris through the sometimes painful journey towards feeling better, whilst safe in the knowledge that he is there to listen and provide support during times of confusion or distress.
With a multi-cultural background, Chris is particularly aware of issues over identity and the way that people “fit in” to the society, job or social group they inhabit: Any loss of grounding may be due to an intrinsic difference between your own background and that of your peers, or due to a change in your circumstances, such as illness, financial problems or the loss of an important person in your life. Chris has worked with a range of mental health issues, treating such conditions as anxiety, depression, anger, addictions and historic trauma.
Chris offers therapy in English, French and Italian.
