David O’Connor aims to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space that will enable clients to express themselves and be heard. He believes that through counselling and the development of an empathic therapeutic relationship, clients can develop a greater awareness of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours that can help them to see things from a different perspective. This in turn helps them to identify ways of changing, and integrating these changes into their daily lives. He believes that everyone is valuable, and given the opportunity to improve their self-awareness has the capacity to make new decisions. David works from a Transactional Analysis approach which also incorporates key themes from humanistic, integrative and psychoanalytical therapies. Through his approach, David aims to foster an atmosphere in which his clients feel supported in gaining insight to support their ability to explore a more satisfying way of being in the world.
David has worked in various business sectors and draws upon this variety of relationship and workplace experiences in his counselling. Having worked in the change and project management environment, David understands the pressures that can be placed upon getting things right within challenging timescales; whether that be internal or external pressures that can lead to unhelpful and damaging coping strategies. David works with his clients to understand and overcome such stresses.
David is currently working towards a Diploma in Transactional Analysis in Counselling and the Certified Transactional Analysis qualification in Psychotherapy. He is a registered member of NCS, UKATA and EATA. He works within The Awareness Centre’s NHS counselling service in Wandsworth.
