Debbie Lovell prioritises the therapeutic relationship, believing that only when a client feels accepted, valued and respected are they able to speak openly about their internal world and life experience. She brings warmth, compassion and, where appropriate, humour to the therapeutic work. Debbie has an integrative approach drawing on various therapeutic models to meet the unique needs of each client. She may use techniques from CBT to explore the interaction of current thoughts, feelings and behaviour or work within a psychodynamic approach if exploring the links of present concerns with earlier life experiences.

Prior to being a counsellor, Debbie ran her own personal training business and lectured in exercise science. As her work became focused on problematic overeating, the challenges of living in a larger body and supporting greater activity in people who struggled to exercise regularly, she recognised the importance of expanding her knowledge base beyond physiology. She therefore retrained in counselling and psychology in order to explore the mental and emotional dimensions of the difficulties her clients brought. The interplay of the mind and the body has remained central to her broader work with stress, anxiety, anger, depression, trauma, body image and self esteem and her special interest in sexual, eating and sleep disturbances.

Having more than 10 years experience as a counsellor, mostly in a private medical practice in Hong Kong, Debbie is currently working towards a doctorate in Counselling Psychology. She is a qualified counsellor and member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP); a board certified clinical sexologist/sex therapist with the Therapist Certification Association (TCA) in the USA; a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), a member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) and a trainee counselling psychologist. Debbie works with The Awareness Centre’s low cost counselling service in Clapham.
