Declan O’Brien believes that we all have innate knowledge and resources that enable us to grow, heal, and experience a fulfilling life. He offers a safe, non-judgemental, and welcoming space where clients can reflect, and freely express emotions. Clients will find a safe and confidential environment. Some memories or emotions may at first not be evident, even to clients, which can leave them feeling lost and confused. Declan ensures that clients feel truly heard and are valued for who they are. He helps clients face and heal from past difficulties while building new strategies to cope with life’s challenges.

He is an integrative counsellor trained in Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. This means he draws on these different approaches and works with clients in the way that best suits them. He has broad experience working with a variety of issues, including those involving relationships, career, loss, LGBT, and illness. Declan has lived in different countries and understands the immigrant experience. He has a special interest in families and friendship groups as places where problems can arise but if the right circumstances are provided these can be addressed and resolved.

Before beginning his counselling career, Declan worked for many years in the healthcare field, in the USA, Ireland as well as the UK, and has travelled extensively. He has previously provided counselling at an LGBT organisation and is familiar in helping clients face some of the associated frustration, disappointment, anger and loss to find self acceptance and joy. He has also worked at a bereavement service and understands the searing pain that that can entail. Additionally, he has several years providing volunteer telephone advice to a variety of client groups.

Declan is a BACP member and has had additional training in trauma, bereavement and mindfulness. He works within The Awareness Centre’s Low-Cost Counselling Service in Clapham. He will shortly be completing an advanced diploma in humanistic integrative counselling.
