Laura Reijonen is approaching her final year of a bachelor’s degree in Humanistic Counselling at the Metanoia institute and looks forward to continuing to study Psychotherapy at a Masters level. Laura works as a trainee counsellor within The Awareness Centre’s low cost counselling service in Clapham.

Laura has an empathic presence that offers depth and strong authenticity. She believes in the importance of connecting with others as well as with oneself. Her focus is on deepening client self-awareness, so that they can gain contact with themselves to find more meaning and fulfilment in life. This deepened contact with themselves also enhances their sense of autonomy. She helps clients find steps forward in life by bringing hidden thoughts or feelings to the surface at their own pace.

Trust and faith in a person’s natural tendency towards growth is a humanistic value that Laura holds to. It is a fundamental point of connection that she uses with clients. She honours the psychological work clients have already been putting in before they arrive at the counselling room and that they will continue to grow after the counselling relationship.

Laura’s therapeutic approach is based on person-centred and gestalt philosophy. Clients are welcomed to come and discuss whatever arises at the time. They may be deeper or lighter matters; abstract matters or seemingly irrelevant matters. But Laura believes that everything is relevant and that natural growth and healing begins as the heart and mind tune into each other. She wants you to feel heard with whatever you have to bring and is sensitive to ensuring you feel comfortable and secure as you broach perhaps uneasy topics.

Though born and raised in London, Laura was raised by European parents and herself lived abroad for a decade. This is one reason for always having been drawn to those who experience a sense of not fitting into the crowd. She has a passion for and has worked with clients on matters of neurodiversity, disability and queerness. Many struggles that clients have brought to her in counselling have stemmed from underlying traumatic experiences. She has an eclectic work background including in music, chef work, care work and working in all weather as a self employed cycle courier.
