Leon Millingen works in private practice on an open–ended basis at The Awareness Centre’s counselling service in Tooting and has experience working with clients with a wide range of issues including (but not exclusively) depression, self esteem, relationships, problem gambling, gender and identity, anxiety, workplace issues and suicidal thoughts.
Leon believes that building a trusting relationship between the counsellor and client is the foundation of a positive therapeutic experience, and encourages the client to progress at their own pace. He utilises Psychodynamic techniques to help the client revisit and review latent and troubling issues, working towards a deeper understanding and resolution. Leon adapts the therapy where necessary to facilitate the needs of the client. Ultimately, he believes in a holistic approach whilst working with the client to take back control of any given situation.
Leon has worked in a number of different sectors over the years, both here and abroad. His work has almost always been public facing. Leon believes that this experience stands him in good stead to understand the variety of social and cultural issues and experiences that are often brought to therapy. Being born and raised in the local area gives him the advantage of understanding local issues.
As an integrative therapist, Leon’s approach to counselling is to garner a safe and non judgemental environment without the client feeling under any pressure to talk about anything until ready to do so. He believes in creating the time and space to explore problematic thoughts, feelings and behaviours in an environment where the client feels safe and fully supported.
Leon has a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and is registered with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). He worked as a placement counsellor at The Awareness Centre for 2 years whilst training.
