Mariella Michaelides meets clients with openness and curiosity, in a space that is both safe and free from judgment. She values diversity highly, practises from an empathic, respectful position and welcomes clients to talk about anything they wish to discuss, without self-censorship. She supports the exploration of each client’s unique lived experience, both within the context of the therapeutic relationship and that of the wider world, encouraging clients to examine long-held patterns of behaviour, defences, and early experiences, in order to make sense of their emotions and responses to life. She strongly believes that giving attention to the things that hurt us, through reflection, self-compassion and curiosity, can eventually give rise to increased vitality, creativity and empowerment; the experience of being in relationship can act as a doorway to greater understanding of the self.
Mariella has worked in a number of fields, but has spent most of her career in international trade. This has allowed her to meet many people from cultures which are different to her own. It has expanded her understanding of the experience of building homes away from home, while adapting to new cultures and social values, making her sensitive to the impact of marginality and the experiences of ‘otherness’ or ‘foreignness’. Mariella is interested in all aspects of the self, from the physical to the cognitive, emotional and spiritual, and is particularly interested in how the body holds and expresses emotions.
Mariella is currently working towards a Masters in Integrative Psychotherapy and is registered with UKCP. Integrative therapy involves drawing upon a range of psychotherapeutic theories and recognising that different people need different approaches at different times. It works with the unconscious to help clients achieve a greater sense of wholeness. Mariella works on an open-ended basis within The Awareness Centre’s low-cost counselling service in Clapham.
