Mike Sands adopts an integrative approach to counselling, combining concepts and techniques from a variety of theoretical approaches, with the objective of providing flexibility in engaging with the unique circumstances of each client. Psychodynamic theory may be used to help clients gain insights into events in their personal history, while existential approaches may be helpful in coming to terms with life’s challenges and necessary choices. Person-centred methods help to create an empathic therapeutic relationship within which clients are helped to explore and understand the issues they bring to therapy in a non-judgemental and accepting environment.
Underlying Mike’s approach is the belief that many clients already have within them the knowledge and resources to develop their potential and address personal and emotional difficulties. Mike aims to provide a safe space within the counselling relationship where the achievement of potential and the development of individual solutions to problems can be facilitated.
Mike has had a long business career and currently works as a Vice President in a large company. Mike believes that many work-related problems are associated with the innate challenges of simply being human, including those associated with conflict in relationships, anxiety and stress and that management of such conditions can facilitated by counselling. Mike has a deep understanding of addiction and other forms of self-destructive behaviour and from this comes a mature, compassionate and empathic approach to understanding and assisting others with problems of a similar nature.
Mike is an integrative counsellor, registered with the BACP. He works within The Awareness Centre’s Low-Cost Counselling service in Clapham. He is currently working towards a Diploma in Integrative Counselling.
Mike offers therapy in English and French.
