Payal Kumar is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Social Worker by training. She is registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), The British Psychological Society (BPS) and is also on the BPS Register of Accredited and Approved Supervisors. She has over 12 years of experience of working with children, adolescents, university students, adults, and families in a range of public, private and voluntary settings such as NHS, education, charities, and Social Services in U.K. and abroad. In addition to private work she also works in a busy NHS team seeing clients experiencing anxiety disorders and depression.
Payal provides individual therapy for a range of issues related to emotional and psychological well-being such as anger, shame, guilt, low self-esteem, depression, post-natal depression, self-confidence, OCD, social anxiety, worry, relationship difficulties, perfectionism and work place problems. She also provides goal focussed interventions for time management and achieving work-life balance.
Based on her clinical and personal therapy experiences (a mandatory component of her training) Payal believes that clients possess the inner resources to bring about change, and attempts to collaboratively uncover these to create a difference. Payal has an empathic, warm, non-judgemental and curious stance and endeavours to provide clients with a safe therapeutic space to move towards their aspirations. She draws on a range of evidence based approaches such as Cognitive behaviour therapy(CBT), Systemic Therapy (Family therapy), Solution focussed therapy and ideas from Mindfulness, and Compassion focussed therapies.
Payal is sensitive to the many contexts we all belong to. Her own inter-cultural experiences of living and working in different countries, being a social worker, a psychologist as well as a clinical supervisor and her own life transitions of migration, relationships, parenthood, being an employee and a business woman have enabled her to be aware and respectful to the challenges we all face. She sees clients from diverse backgrounds such as education, law, medicine, finance, media, journalism, fashion and politics and has a special interest in parental mental health, long term conditions (such as chronic fatigue syndrome, physical health problems), work place stress and redundancy, and the role of transitions in life (e.g. pregnancy, becoming new parents).
Payal works in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Clapham and Tooting. She offers therapy in English and Hindi.
