Philam Nguyen believes the greatest therapeutic change comes through relationship. Steeped heavily in the Humanistic Model as the foundation and Existential Model as a philosophical influence, Philam incorporates the Integrative model to draw upon several schools of psychotherapy to suit the needs of each unique client. This allows for the cultivation of a therapeutic relationship for which the client may feel safe to explore the most guarded and vulnerable parts of their inner self. The self that is hidden to most of the everyday world and possibly to the client’s present awareness.
It’s in this exploration within the therapeutic relationship that the client then has the space to explore an understanding of the “self” that allows for growth, insight and the client’s very own sense of being. Philam believes people are individuals; all with their own set of emotions, experiences and insight into the world. Therefore, so is every client’s needs in therapy.
Philam has an extensive history working with abused young adults in foster care and rehabilitation for adult offenders in prisons. He also has personal lived experience of the mental health system.
Being of Asian origin and living with a disability, he possesses a unique perspective and a deep level of empathy. It is due to these experiences that Philam understands the importance of working with and empowering the client and not solely a condition. Some of the issues he is experienced in working with are Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Abuse, Self-Harm, Anger and Stress.
Philam is an Integrative Counsellor With the Foundations of Humanistic and Influences of Existential Models. He is a member of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adheres to their Ethical Framework. He is currently studying for a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and working in The Awareness Centre’s low cost counselling service in Clapham.
