Melis Turkoglu is a training on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy and is a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). She has previously completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Counselling, and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Health Services. She currently works within The Awareness Centre’s low cost service in Tooting offering face-to-face counselling.

Melis provides a confidential and reflective space for clients to explore and process difficulties, and work towards goals. She works relationally, with the understanding that the quality of the therapeutic relationship plays a key factor in successful therapy. Her approach is integrative, drawing on psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive behavioural models to tailor therapy to individual client needs, whether that be challenging unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, working towards living a more meaningful life, or processing and exploring childhood experiences so that clients can live a more contented adult lives.

Melis’s work is influenced by her educational background in psychology, and she brings a strong knowledge base into her work to help clients understand what may be going on for them. She has a keen interest in psychodynamic and attachment theories, looking at how early childhood attachments impact our adult relationships. As part of her training, Melis has also undertaken years of personal therapy, so understands just how daunting It can be to seek therapy, but also just how helpful therapy can be in fostering better psychological wellbeing.

Melis has previously worked with clients and families in social care and rehabilitation, as a support worker and team leader for clients with acquired brain injury, so is well suited to working with carers and those who have experienced trauma. She has also undertaken placements at Mind, Missing People’s charity, and as a counsellor in NHS IAPT services and has experience offering both short term and open-ended therapy.
