The Awareness Centre (TAC) was founded in 2005 by Michaela McCarthy and has developed into one of the leading providers of Counselling and Psychotherapy in London. More recently, Kelly Garrett joined TAC as Clinical Director, working with Michaela to develop the Centre further.

The Awareness Centre has over 200 practitioners offering different approaches of talking therapies to support our ever growing clientele. Some of our counsellors also work with clients via Skype and telephone sessions.

We work with individuals, couples, families, children, adolescents and groups and all of our experienced counsellors and psychotherapists are fully qualified, registered and insured. Our therapists work within our NHS, FreeLow Cost or Private Counselling Services and we are a registered healthcare provider. We also provide a multilingual, LGBT and Children and Adolescent counselling service to support the London community.

The Awareness Centre is a limited company and works with other commercial and charity organisations. We are contracted by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) providing a counselling service within GP’s surgeries in Lambeth and work in partnership with Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT). We are also contracted by NHS England to provide the counselling service in HMP Brixton, which is a category C prison for men. We are also associated to the Sloane Court Clinic.

We also provide range of clinical courses and CPD Seminars for counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists to develop their learning and skills as a practitioner. Our programme offers a certificated training course in CBT and Couples Therapy and CPD Seminars in the Imago and Relationship Approach and Working with Couples. Our facilitators come with a wealth of experience and you will be provided with a certificate after completion of either a course or a seminar. Our courses and seminars are endorsed by BACP and COSRT. We also offer workshops to clients who want to explore their own self development in addition to personal therapy.

In addition, we offer clinical and creative therapy workshops and complementary therapy courses at TAC. We also provide Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. These meetings are self-supporting groups for people who are struggling with addiction.

The Awareness Centre provides the largest voluntary Clinical Placement for therapists, offering both short and long term therapy to clients in South London. We recruit therapists from the most established clinical training institutes in London.

Although Michaela and Kelly lead The Awareness Centre, and work in private practice as psychotherapists, both come from a business background and believe in providing an integrative approach to clinical therapy. During Michaela’s clinical training she had a vision to share her own personal and professional development with others and decided to embark on a journey to establish The Awareness Centre.

Our philosophy at The Awareness Centre is to offer a relaxing environment so that clients and practitioners can co-create a therapeutic relationship. This space will enable clients to explore issues, thoughts, meaning and develop their self-awareness at their own pace, as well as having the opportunity to experience complementary therapies. We also believe that ‘one approach to therapy does not treat or teach all’, so it is worth looking at our website, or speaking to a member of our team, to find the right path for you.

We are open seven days a week, between 7.00am-10.00pm on Monday to Friday, 9.00am-6.00pm on Saturday and 10am-4.00pm on Sundays. We are closed on Bank Holidays. Should you need to contact us during out of hours, our emergency number for urgent calls only is 07850 282 495. Our centre also provides disabled access.

What people say

Psychotherapy wasn’t something I ever thought I would be looking for, but after going through a period of having emotional mood swings and feeling lost in my head, my friends advised me to seek some professional help. I did a simple internet search and found Kelly. At first I didn’t know what to expect and felt quite anxious about opening up to a stranger about very personal matters, but once my sessions began, Kelly made it so easy for me and I just talked about anything and everything. …
