The Awareness Centre
The Awareness Centre (TAC) was founded in 2005 by Michaela McCarthy and has developed into one of the leading providers of safe and confidential counselling and psychotherapy services to the local and wider community in South London. Kelly Garrett joined TAC as the Clinical Director in 2012, and works with Michaela and the team to continue to develop the Centre and its mental health services.
At TAC we are a registered healthcare provider with more than 150 practitioners meeting the diverse mental health and wellbeing needs of our clients in London through face-to-face talking therapies within our low cost, NHS or private therapy services.
All of our experienced counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists are fully qualified, registered and insured. They offer multi-theoretical approaches and are able to work with a range of presenting issues, including, but not exclusive to: abuse, addiction, anger management, bereavement, children and adolescents, depression, eating disorders, LGBT+, sexuality, sex and relationships, and trauma. We have the capacity for various specialisms and currently offer counselling in more than 25 languages. Some of our counsellors also work with clients via Skype, and some offer telephone sessions.
Our low-cost and NHS clients include couples and individuals aged 18-plus. Our private clients include individuals, couples and families, children aged from 3 years, young people 13-17 years, and people 18-plus.
TAC accepts self-referrals and referrals from community learning difficulties teams for both children and adults, mental health teams, probation service teams, substance misuse teams, GPs, nurses, psychiatrists, and other professionals.
The Awareness Centre is a limited company and works with other commercial and charity organisations. It is contracted by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) and South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) to work in partnership with Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) to deliver 6 or 12 free counselling sessions within GP surgeries in Lambeth and Wandsworth. It is also contracted by Care UK to deliver the counselling service in HMP Brixton, which is a category C prison for men.
The Awareness Centre provides personal development workshops for clients. All of our facilitators come with a wealth of experience.
The Awareness Centre provides the largest voluntary Counselling Placement for therapists, offering both short and long term therapy to clients in London. We recruit therapists from the most established clinical training institutes in London.
Our philosophy at The Awareness Centre is to offer a relaxing environment where clients and practitioners can co-create a therapeutic relationship. This space enables clients to explore issues, thoughts and meaning, to support their mental health and to develop self-awareness at their own pace. We also believe that ‘one approach to therapy does not treat or teach all’, so it is worth looking at our website, or speaking to a member of our team, to find the right path for you.
The Awareness Centre’s long-term, short-term, low-cost and private counselling and psychotherapy is available Monday to Friday 07.00-22.00. On Saturday we are open 09.00-18.00, and on Sunday 10.00-14.00. We are closed on Bank Holidays. Should you need to contact TAC during out of hours, our emergency number for urgent calls only is 07850 282 495. The Centre also provides disabled access.
We provide a sliding fee scale to match your circumstances. Low-cost appointments are charged at £20 or £35 per session, with private therapy costing £50-130 per session.
The Awareness Centre adheres to the BACP Ethical Framework, which therapists talk through when they have an initial consultation with clients. All clients are given the opportunity to ask any questions, including any queries around when confidentiality may be breached if there is a risk to yourself or others present.
