Clea Duval’s therapeutic approach is integrative and is informed by Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy modalities. Clea’s integrative training allows her to draw from these different approaches which can be adapted to suit the unique needs of each individual. She may incorporate aspects of the person-centred approach to work collaboratively with clients to explore their current struggles and work towards self-acceptance. With her psychodynamic perspective, she can work with clients to understand how past experiences may be influencing their current patterns of relating. Where appropriate, Clea also embraces CBT principles and can help clients to explore and address any unhelpful thinking patterns. Clea believes that at the heart of her work with clients is the therapeutic relationship. She provides an empathic, non-judgemental, and accepting space for clients, where they feel valued and can explore any difficulties they are facing.
Clea brings a diverse background to her counselling practice, having worked and volunteered extensively with vulnerable adults, children and their families, both in the education and charity sectors. As a social worker in South Africa, Clea worked with clients of all backgrounds facing many difficult challenges including abuse, family breakdown, and mental health issues. These experiences shaped her commitment to supporting people who may be marginalised, and around issues of social injustice such as forced migration. Clea has a particular interest in working with clients who are experiencing loneliness, isolation and any life transitions such as divorce, menopause, age-related challenges, all of which can be overwhelming. She builds a supportive and trusting relationship that encourages clients to feel comfortable to explore and think about their experiences, ways of coping and working towards change.
Clea is an integrative counsellor and is currently working towards a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. She is a registered student member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and a member of the BPS. Clea also holds a MSc in Psychology and she works within The Awareness Centre’s NHS counselling service in Lambeth.
