James McCarthy is an Integrative Counsellor and registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). James holds an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and has experience supporting clients within private practice and NHS Talking Therapies services in Wandsworth. Alongside his core training, James has undertaken additional professional development in bereavement, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), eating disorders, attachment theory and neuroscience. His integrative approach enables him to draw on a range of evidence-based therapeutic models to meet each client’s individual needs. These include Person-Centred therapy, Gestalt therapy and Psychodynamic therapy. James works with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties and is committed to providing a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment where clients can explore challenges, gain insight and work towards meaningful change.

At the heart of James’s practice is the belief that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. He views counselling as a collaborative process, where trust, empathy and authenticity provide the foundation for growth. Drawing from a Person-Centred perspective, he offers a warm and accepting space in which clients feel heard and understood. His Gestalt training encourages awareness of present experiences, emotions and patterns of behaviour, while his Psychodynamic understanding helps clients explore how early relationships and attachment experiences may continue to influence their lives. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, James works flexibly, tailoring therapy to each individual’s experiences, goals and strengths. He strives to help clients develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience and self-compassion, supporting them in making lasting and meaningful changes.

Before becoming a therapist, James trained in the arts and worked within the film and entertainment industry. This experience gave him first-hand insight into the pressures, expectations and stresses that can affect mental wellbeing, identity and relationships. His own experience of therapy inspired a career change and fostered a particular passion for supporting men’s mental health. James has a specialist interest in working with clients experiencing ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, bereavement, relationship difficulties, binge eating and compulsive eating behaviours. He also has experience supporting survivors of sexual abuse and is committed to providing an inclusive and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ clients and individuals from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds. James believes that every person’s story is unique and works alongside clients to help them move towards a more fulfilling and balanced life.
