Jane Buchanan
Jane Buchanan is an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist who trained to post-graduate level at the University of Roehampton. She also holds an MA in Philosophy. Jane works relationally from a person-centred base, where her clients are deeply valued and respected, as both unique individuals and fellow human beings. As such, Jane works with clients collaboratively, in a non-judgmental and empathetic way and abides by the ethical framework of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), of which she is a registered member. She integrates psychodynamic, cognitive and existential therapeutic approaches and tailors them to the individual. Additionally, Jane’s practice draws upon contemporary insights from trauma therapy and relational neuroscience. Jane works with adults on a wide range of issues, in person from Clapham and online. She has experience of working short and long term.
Jane understands that it can take courage entering therapy, especially when feeling vulnerable already but she warmly invites all her clients to the safe, confidential, friendly and supportive space which lies at the heart of her therapy. She is genuinely interested in all her clients’ experiences and always holds their more painful feelings with great care. She understands some journeys in life are much more difficult than anticipated, with unexpected sources of stress, change or loss, which can not only cause depression or anxiety but also challenge people’s sense of confidence, self-worth and identity. Jane understands loss can change you and believes we are entitled to grieve our losses in their fullness. She can travel alongside you during these times, with empathy and compassion, offering therapeutic support and a safe space which prioritises your wellbeing, allowing you to process your emotions freely. This can bolster your resilience and crucially help you feel less alone, foster your own resources and increase your capacity for self-compassion.
Jane addresses symptoms but also works on a deeper level to understand the roots of issues, promoting more comprehensive, autonomous change in a client’s way of thinking and being. If appropriate and with great sensitivity, Jane can facilitate greater self-awareness, through a psychodynamic lens, of how past experiences and relationships, often from childhood, may influence someone’s life today. This empowers people to live more freely, with a greater sense of connection, leaving behind relational patterns that no longer serve them. Jane can also help clients find their personal sense of meaning or purpose. She respects and affirms each clients lived experience and unique inter-generational and cultural context, including their gender and sexual identity.
Jane understands the stress of balancing the demands of family, work, studying and relationships. She also works with childhood/adult trauma; fertility, peri/ menopause; neurodiversity, bereavement; chronic health conditions; loneliness; life transitions; addictive behaviours; self-worth and anger.
