Jr Atkins is an integrative counsellor working within the Private Practice service at The Awareness Centre. He holds a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and brings over 14 years of professional experience in addiction, mental health and recovery settings. Jr is an accredited member of the NCPS and has worked extensively with adults facing addiction, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, OCD traits and the long-term impact of childhood trauma. His background spans aftercare therapy, relapse-prevention work, group facilitation and one-to-one support for clients at various stages of recovery. This clinical experience allows him to understand the complex emotional, behavioural and relational patterns that clients bring into the therapy room, and to support them in developing sustainable change. Jr has a particular interest in how early experiences, shame and internalised criticism shape adulthood. Many of the people he works with struggle with an inner-critic, emotional dysregulation, people-pleasing, boundary difficulties or patterns that they don’t fully understand. Through a compassionate and relational approach, he helps clients trace these experiences back to their origins, recognise the emotional weight they still carry and build healthier, more confident ways of responding. Using CBT, Jr supports clients in identifying cycles of anxious or self-defeating thoughts, while his Gestalt work helps clients deepen their awareness of what is happening in the present moment—physically, emotionally and relationally. His person-centred foundation ensures that every client is treated as an individual, with therapy tailored to their needs, pace and goals. Jr believes that meaningful change happens when clients feel understood and empowered. Whether working with addiction, anxiety, anger, low self-esteem or trauma-related concerns, he encourages clients to reconnect with their resilience, develop emotional clarity and cultivate a stronger sense of self-worth. His approach helps clients move from merely coping to living with greater purpose, choice and emotional wellbeing.

Jr works integrative, drawing on Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Psychodynamic and Gestalt approaches. He views therapy as a collaborative process, where clients are met with warmth, steadiness and genuine curiosity. His aim is to create a space where clients feel safe enough to explore difficult emotions, challenge long-standing beliefs and reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been suppressed through survival or coping strategies.
