Maryam Samar
Maryam Samar is a trainee integrative practitioner. She is currently completing her Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. She also holds a Master’s in Psychology and a BSc (Hons) degree in Counselling. She is a registered student member with the BACP and works within The Awareness Centre’s low cost counselling service in Clapham.
Maryam is trained to blend components of different therapeutic approaches according to her client’s needs such as psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Maryam’s non-judgmental and empathic approach provides her clients the opportunity to identify resources for themselves. She believes the process of self-exploration helps the clients to identify thoughts, emotions and behaviours that, once accessed, may offer the client a greater sense of personal resources and self-determined change. Her aim is to use her creative skills while providing a safe environment so she can help her clients to identify their internal or external conflicts, promote and develop personal awareness and work with their unsettling thoughts, feelings and perceptions as well as tapping into the events that stop them moving forward in life. Her overall aim is to provide her clients with opportunities to work in self-defined ways and towards living in more satisfying and resourceful ways as individuals.
Maryam has worked in the fashion industry for the past 15 years. She understands the feeling of being judged on appearances that can destroy one’s self-esteem and confidence. In addition to this she has experience of working as a volunteer for an organisation providing emotional support through a telephone helpline to anyone struggling to cope or at risk of suicide.
