Nicola Gilbert
Nicola Gilbert works with people who feel lost, like they have missed years of living and do not know who they are anymore. She supports people who feel scared, angry, or ambiguous about both their present and future, and are keen to talk with someone who can listen to their experiences without judgement but are wondering how to trust someone again. Clients might have experienced sexual assault, survived domestic abuse, have a new or evolving health diagnosis, experienced a bereavement, or have recognised that their childhood was not like other people’s. Nicola also has a particular interest in women’s health including endometriosis and PCOS. Being queer, bisexual, and disabled, as well as living with invisible disabilities and long-term health conditions means that Nicola understands what it is like to feel different and to be physically and mentally impacted by life.
Working integratively, Nicola adapts her approach according to the client. This includes supporting people who do not necessarily know what to say or how psychotherapy works. She uses psychodynamic approaches to explore past experiences, somatic models to support emotional awareness and understanding of what clients are feeling in the present, and relational dynamics to help people understand where some of their reactions to themselves and others originate. Nicola utilises trauma-informed practices to enable exploration of traumatic experiences and anti-oppressive models to understand how trauma is impacted by sociocultural contexts. She welcomes people of different cultures, ages, religions, genders, and sexual orientations, and has experience working with clients with ADHD.
Nicola has seventeen years’ experience of working in wellbeing roles including in organisations focusing on violence against women and girls. This work led her to train as an integrative psychotherapist, work which she loves. Nicola is currently a trainee psychotherapist under the UKCP and is undertaking a Masters in Integrative Psychotherapy. She has experience working with clients including at a women’s centre and online counselling service, working both short-term and long-term. Nicola works in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Tooting.
