James McCarthy is a registered member of the BACP and holds an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling. He works in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Clapham and is dedicated to supporting clients in a warm and confidential environment. He offers both short-term and open-ended therapy options to suit individual needs.

With additional training in bereavement, CBT, eating disorders, neuroscience and attachments, and suicide prevention, James brings a broad and versatile skill set to his practice. His integrative approach means he draws from several therapeutic models to tailor the experience to each client. This includes a Person-Centred approach, where he creates a trusting, empathetic space for clients to feel heard and understood; Gestalt therapy, which encourages clients to connect with their present emotions and experiences; and Psychodynamic therapy, exploring how early attachments influence adult relationships. James strongly believes in the value of co-creating a therapeutic relationship. He sees therapy as a collaborative journey in which mutual trust allows for meaningful growth and impactful change.

Initially trained in the arts, James worked in the film and entertainment industry, witnessing firsthand the pressures and challenges that can affect mental well-being. His personal journey through therapy sparked a commitment to men’s mental health, inspiring him to transition into his career as a therapist. James has experience working with the NHS Talking Therapies Service. His specialist interests are anxiety, binge and compulsive eating, depression, relationships, stress and trauma, including survivors of sexual abuse. He actively supports the LGBTQIA+ community and provides a safe, inclusive space for clients from diverse backgrounds.
