Lisa York
Lisa York is a psychodynamic counsellor with a BA (Hons) in Counselling. She is registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and working at The Awareness Centre, Tooting in private practice.
Taking the step to work with a counsellor can be an enriching experience with rewarding benefits. We all experience times of struggles, suffering or loss and at times we are able to manage life’s adversities but sometimes feelings can become too overwhelming where we can get a bit stuck. Talking to a counsellor, someone who is impartial with no previous involvement in our lives, can help make sense of the discomfort, pain or distress we are facing. This can be a valuable decision where feelings can become less debilitating and where life can then move in a different direction.
Lisa works primarily with the psychodynamic modality which is open-ended but can also be for a time limited period. It involves looking at past experiences as well as attachment styles and how they affect current thought patterns and behaviours. Often this will present as depression or anxiety stemming from problematic or traumatic childhood experiences such as emotional, psychological, physical or sexual abuse. This can result in maladaptive thought patterns causing difficulty in relating to the self and others. Exploring this together in a supportive and confidential environment can help make sense and process what you are experiencing or feeling and what could be holding you back. Together we can look at developing tools and strategies and how best to initiate change going forward to help live in a more productive and fulfilling way.
With a background in HR, working with special needs children and the elderly, Lisa has always been drawn to roles in connecting to people. Being a relational person, she has always had a desire to help and encourage others which led her to becoming a counsellor. She has experience in working with loss, anxiety, depression, loneliness, shame, identity issues and Aspergers/Autism. Her aim is to help bring deeper insight, clarity and helpful ways of thinking through establishing a therapeutic relationship built on trust and acceptance with every client.
