Marie McTaggart
Marie McTaggart has foundation degrees in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy, and a Diploma in Addiction Counselling. She is also a registered member of the BACP. She works in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Tooting.
Marie believes that if we are to maximise our potential in life, we must first develop a healthy sense of self. Marie offers her clients a space where life’s problems can be shared without judgement or bias. Well aware that sharing can be difficult and daunting, Marie is patient, gentle, and takes great care to ensure that her clients feel safe, secure, and heard.
As an integrative therapist, Marie is able to draw upon a wide range of expertise and options for intervention to help clients manage problematic behaviour or uncomfortable feelings as they occur, while seeking their underlying causes. Marie’s practice is underpinned by a comprehensive understanding of how self-worth, formed during early interactions with parents or caregivers, is often the driver for problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviour in adulthood.
Marie spent eleven years working with children under eleven as a teaching assistant in inner-city schools. The work, which often involved supporting the emotional needs of young people with inconsistent or absent parents, inspired Marie to develop an interest in family dynamics and family systems, and in how trauma is passed from generation to generation. This set her on the path to becoming a therapist.
Marie began her journey as a therapist working within the prison estate, where she remained for twelve years. During this time, Marie strengthened her knowledge of attachment-related issues, and gained invaluable experience in working with trauma and complex individual needs. Able to bring this depth of experience and knowledge to bear in her private practice, Marie has worked successfully with clients experiencing issues including, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, issues with anger, PTSD, and addiction.
