Tom Underwood
Tom Underwood is a qualified therapist and is a registered member of the BACP, working in private practice at The Awareness Centre in Clapham. Being an Integrative therapist allows him to tailor his practice to an individual’s needs drawing from humanistic approaches to therapy (person-centred, psychodynamic, relational, and solution-focused), whilst also encouraging a collaborative & safe working relationship. Tom offers a non-judgmental space for his clients and leads his sessions with curiosity, empathy, and a desire to promote positive change. Tom has a wide range of experience of providing both short and long-term therapy for various issues such as Abuse, Anger, Anxiety, Confidence, Depression, Self-Esteem, OCD, ADHD, Sexuality, Relationships, Guilt, Shame, and Isolation, amongst others.
After gaining a degree in Psychology early on in his career, Tom then moved towards the corporate sector and also lived abroad for years in various countries. After seeing more of the world and gaining a broader set of life experiences, Tom decided to return to Psychology, and more specifically to Counselling and Psychotherapy, with the goal of training in a profession that combined his affinity for people with an opportunity to give back to others. He has developed a keen appreciation of diversity and interest in LGBTQ+ issues.
Throughout his time at The Awareness Centre, Tom has worked within our Low-Cost service whilst on training, as well as in our NHS department as an Administrator, Counselling Services Coordinator, and Clinical Team Leader. Tom has a genuine desire to support therapists’ professional development and currently does so working as a Senior Placement Lead within our NHS services. With a wealth of experience gained during his time at The Awareness Centre, this enables him to support both our therapists and clients within our services.
My experience with The Awareness Centre, and with my therapist in particular has had a transformatively positive impact on my life. I was provided with the professional and confidential help that I needed to allow me to deal with past issues and grow from them, I believe this will stay with me as I finish my course of therapy and have a great benefit going forward.
I have been working with Tom for the last 6 months. From the outset he was warm kind and compassionate, listening intently to me describe my emotions, feelings and behaviours. This created a safe space where I feel completely accepted and respected, enabling me to be honest and open in I way I never have been before. Over the this time, our way of working together has developed and I have gained greater clarity and confidence from it. I feel more empowered to say how I feel and ask for what I want to those I love and who love me. Tom is a fantastic therapist and incredible person. Thank you!
