Julia Normington offers a non-judgemental, safe and empathic therapeutic space where current difficulties, stressful, anxious or confused feelings in relationships, at home or at work or priorities in your life can be talked about. You may have a problem or an issue that is troubling you and you are looking for professional help. There are many different reasons for seeing a counsellor, but talking to someone other than family and friends can provide an independent and confidential space to explore concerns.
Julia’s approach is based on Transactional Analysis, which is an integrative approach and tailored to the client’s needs. It includes reflecting on a problem, noticing ways you might manage difficult feelings and perhaps thinking about things in a different way, which can help to make sense of what is happening. Julia finds that clients may seek counselling because they feel stuck or conflicted in repeated patterns and relationships which can be unsatisfying and damaging. Most people want to live more as themselves, feel more fulfilled and accepting and develop their potential.
Julia works collaboratively with individuals and couples according to their therapeutic needs. This might mean long term work that is open ended and exploratory or shorter term work on a specific issue. A career in the corporate environment and living in different countries has led to Julia having a special interest in how culture and our social environment shapes our beliefs about ourselves and other people. Julia uses this in her client work to consider shameful feelings, identity, self-esteem, belonging or not belonging, co-dependency, challenges facing expatriates, experiences of boarding school. She woks with eating disorders and disordered thinking around food and body image.
Julia is a fully qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in Transactional Analysis and is completing a post-graduate Masters degree in Psychotherapy. She works in private practice at The Awareness Centre, Clapham. She is a registered member of the BACP and has undertaken further training in Couples counselling. Julia has worked for many years as a counsellor and her experience includes private practice, NHS secondary care, youth counselling, drug addiction helpline and the Samaritans.
