Joe Day places emphasis on cultivating a good therapeutic relationship in order to help clients open up and explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe, secure environment. He understands the need for his clients to feel heard in a non-judgemental way and welcomes each client as an individual who requires a tailored approach to work through their difficulties. Joe is a humanistic counsellor who uses an integrative approach with clients. This may include Transactional Analysis to help clients develop more autonomy over their lives or Gestalt in order to gain a wider understanding of the connection between their physical and emotional needs. Empathy and authenticity are vital to Joe’s way of working, allowing the client to go at a pace that feels comfortable to them.
Joe has worked as a support worker for individuals with complex disabilities and learning difficulties for over two years. Communication and empathy is paramount in this line of work, supporting individuals to lead fulfilling, independent, creative lives. This role has included supporting individuals with depression, anxiety, isolation, self harm, anger and relationship issues.
Prior to this, his experience working in the music industry gave him an insight into the effects of burnout, stress and depression which can stem from high pressured careers. Joe has a particular interest in mindfulness and the mind-body connection.
Joe is working towards an Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling and is a member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy. He works with The Awareness Centre’s low cost counselling service in Clapham.
