Lambeth Talking Therapies has achieved the highest ever patient recovery rates for the borough in the first quarter of 2015 – and the best results for the last five years.
The Awareness Centre (TAC) is contracted by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) to work within Lambeth Talking Therapies to provide counselling to patients at GP surgeries in Lambeth, as part of an integrated IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Services) programme.
For the quarter January to March 2015, recovery rates for patients receiving counselling in Lambeth were 43% (exceeding targets by eight percentage points), while recovery rates for patients receiving CBT through Lambeth IAPT were 55% (five percentage points above target). Together, recovery rates were 47%, exceeding target by three percentage points.
Recovery rates are measured through weekly questionnaires that score patients’ levels of anxiety and depression.
Early results from a survey of GPs carried out by SLaM found that 80% of patients were seen within the first 28 days of contacting the service, and that GPs and patients rated the service highly. Full results of this survey will be out in September.
Commenting on these positive results, Michaela McCarthy, Managing Director of The Awareness Centre, said: “I’m delighted that all the hard work of the teams involved is producing such strong recovery rates. This is evidence to prove that our counselling service model is a success at supporting the mental health of patients in Lambeth.”
John Manley, Clinical Director at Lambeth IAPT, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, added: “I’m hugely impressed with these results and the standards of counselling service delivery. Working together we continue to reduce waiting times and help more people across Lambeth access the psychological services they need.”
